Police officer sprints to stop out of control car after driver has a medical episode

A Tonawanda, N.Y., police officer earned the nickname Roadrunner after sprinting to stop a runaway car after the driver had a medical episode. The Town of Tonawanda Police Department this week shared a video of the incredible May 14 traffic stop. Officers responded to Brighton Rd. for a vehicle that hit multiple cars, was not stopping for red lights, and was driving on the wrong side of the road, the police department said. The unresponsive driver turned out to be an elderly individual having an unspecified medical episode. Joe Cavalleri (AKA Roadrunner) sprinted after the vehicle and was able to safely bring it to a stop, police said. The dashboard-camera video shows police driving in a relatively low-speed formation around the vehicle, maneuvering to contain it to the right lane, as it appears to be slowing down. Then, Cavalleri can be seen running to catch up to the vehicle, which is still slowing, and he jogs alongside it as he opens the drivers door. Still at a jog, Cavalleri holds onto the roof and jumps both feet into the car to hit the brakes, then appears to put the car in park.
